How to Prepare for Your Child’s First IEP Meeting

You just got the call (or the email)—your child’s IEP meeting is scheduled.
If you're feeling nervous, overwhelmed, or unsure what to expect, you’re not alone.

Here’s how to prepare, what to bring, and what to keep in mind so you can walk in feeling grounded and ready.

📄 Before the Meeting: What to Do

  • Review the assessments
Read the reports ahead of time. Highlight what makes sense—and what doesn’t.

  • Write down your questions
No question is too small. You’re your child’s best advocate.

  • Bring a support person
A friend, advocate, therapist—anyone who helps you stay focused and grounded.

🧠 During the Meeting: What to Expect

  • You’ll hear from each professional who assessed your child

  • You’ll review whether your child qualifies for special education

  • If eligible, you’ll discuss:

    • Services (speech, OT, counseling, etc.)

    • Supports (accommodations, modifications)

    • Goals (academic, social, behavioral)

💬 Helpful Phrases to Use

  • “Can you explain that another way?”

  • “How does this service support my child’s learning?”

  • “I need time to review this before signing.”

💛 After the Meeting: Next Steps

  • You’ll receive a copy of the IEP

  • You can agree to all, part, or none of it

  • You can request another meeting at any time

❤️ Final Thoughts

The IEP meeting is about more than paperwork—it’s about your child and their right to thrive in school.
